An Article on Parveen Shakir and Her Poetry

Parveen Shakir (Urdu: پروین شاکر) (November 24, 1952 - December 26, 1994) was a Pakistani Urdu poet, teacher and a civil servant of the Government of Pakistan.

Parveen started writing at an early age and published her first volume of poetry, Khushbu [Fragrance], to great acclaim, in 1976. She subsequently published other volumes of poetry - all well-received - including Inkaar [Refusal], Sad-barg [Marsh Marigold], Khud Kalami [Conversing with the Self] and Kaf-e-Aa'ina [The Edge of the Mirror], besides a collection of her newspaper columns, titled Gosha-e-Chashm [The Sight Corner], and was awarded one of Pakistan's highest honours, the Pride of Performance for her outstanding contribution to literature.

I have got an article on Parveen Shakir and her poetry which is quite interesting. I am going to post it here. I hope you ill like it. Here you go!

  1. Though I did not meet Parveen Shakir, I was impressed by her poetry. I had also dedicated some ash'ar to her and the entire breed of new poetesses and women activisits. Here are those asha'ar:
Qalamkari mein maahir ho gayee hai
ghazal Parveen Shakir ho gagee hai

nihaan thay ham se jo aurat ke jazbe
wo khud unki musawwir ho gayee hai

There are more asha'ar in this poem, which you will read when I send collection of my poetry "Amad-Amad" to you soon insha allah.
