Abdul Haleem Sharar is considered to be one of the oldest Urdu novelists. He has written many Urdu novels which are very interesting and knowledge providing books.
“Tahira” is also one of his popular novels. It is a story of a Muslim Indian girl who was declared to be an “English” as she raised in English environment and learnt English language and modern education, due to which Muslim Aalims declared her an "English Girl".
Tahira was an orphan girl and was grown up in the home of her uncle Azeez Ullah who was an employee in the British residency. Azeez Ullah wanted his son Wali Ullah, who was student in an Islamic Madrasa in Farangi Mahal Lucknow, to marry Tahira but Wali Ullah refused to do that. That was shocking for Azeez Ullah as the boys at that time did never refuse the choice of parents. This was shocking for Tahira too as she liked Wali Ullah. But Wali Ullah refused to marry Tahira because he believed that Tahira had become Christian as she learnt from an English lady. When his father tried to convience him and told that Tahira is Muslim and by learning English one does not become Non Muslim. Wali Ullah left home and went on a journey of Hajj to sake the true teaching of Islam.
What happened to his parents and Tahira?? What did he learn from his journey?? How was his journey?? All these things are mentioned in a quite interesting style. The language structure is just superb and quite difficult to understand in this modern age.
“Tahira” is the Story of love, hate and behavioral conflict between The Indian Muslims and The British.
